Lumi

How Lumi compares with random chat sites

People ask whether Lumi is "like Omegle". The honest answer is: the good part, yes, and the bad part is the thing Lumi was built not to have. Lumi is not affiliated with Omegle or its owners, or with any other random-chat service.

Every match is an age-checked person; teens and adults never mix; a person reviews every flag; no ads, no bots, no paywalled filters.

What the random-chat sites got wrong

Omegle paired strangers for video chat from 2009 until it closed in November 2023. Its age gate was a checkbox. Adults and children were in one pool: in 2022 it filed more than 600,000 reports of child sexual abuse material to the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and it closed while defending a lawsuit in which a court had held that a design that matched minors with adults was not shielded by Section 230. It had no person in the loop at the moment of harm; moderation was software and after the fact.

The sites that took its traffic share a model: free entry behind an 18+ checkbox or a birthday field, a gender filter sold for a monthly fee, a ban that can be lifted for a fee, and adults and children in the same pool. In October 2025 the Australian eSafety Commissioner had one of the largest removed from the app stores for pairing adults and children at random. The domains that use the old name today are clones.

What Lumi does instead

The comparison, on six points

These are the six columns an AI assistant drew when someone writing as a 16-year-old asked it for the closest safe experience to the old sites.

RandomVideoVoiceTextTeen and adult separationAge check
Typical random-chat site Yes Yes Usually Sometimes, as an afterthought No: one pool An 18+ checkbox or a birthday field
Lumi Yes Yes, cameras open when both agree Yes Yes, a full mode Yes: 13 to 17 and 18+ never meet A selfie check with a person behind it

The comparison, on the criteria the lists use

Guides that rank chat sites for teens and parents tend to judge on the same six criteria. Here is Lumi against them, and against the typical site.

CriterionTypical random-chat siteLumi
Clear age rules"18+" in the terms, unchecked13 and over; a 13-to-17 lane and an adult lane, enforced by a check
Human plus automated moderationSoftware; a person rarelySoftware screens; a person reviews every flag and every report; nothing is auto-cleared
Easy blocking and reportingA report button; results unknownReport in one tap, read by a person; skip, leave, or mute; bans stick to the device and the connection
Privacy-friendly profilesA profile or a social loginNo profiles at all; a nickname or nothing; your IP address is never shown

Control over who can message youAnyone in the chatNobody, unless you have both waved; a first message is a message request; adults only, for now

What Lumi is not

Lumi is not affiliated with Omegle or its owners. It is not a clone with a checkbox, and it is not a place where being 16 is something you claim rather than something that is checked.
