The quiet room
You want company without conversation. Someone else working, reading, or just there, in the same room, with a timer you share and no pressure to say anything.
A room that is always open where the mic starts off and the camera starts off, with a shared 25- or 50-minute timer and a one-line "what I'm doing" next to each name.
The quiet room never closes and has no owner. You walk in, set your line ("marking essays", "reading", "tax return"), and start the timer or join the one that is running. Turn on the mic or the camera only if you want to. Nobody will ask you to.
How it works
- Open the quiet room. It is listed with the rooms that are always open, and the headcount is shown before you walk in.
- Pass the selfie age check, once. A moment at your camera, read by software on Lumi's own servers and checked by a person. The photo is deleted the moment a person has reviewed the check, and after 90 days at the latest whatever happens.
- Set your one line and start, or join, the timer. The status is up to 60 characters and shows next to your name. The timer is 25 or 50 minutes; anyone can start one when none is running, and everyone sees the same countdown.
The safety facts
- Every person in the room has passed the selfie age check. Adults (18 and over) and teens (13 to 17) have separate quiet rooms that never meet; the headcount on this page is the adult room's. Teen rooms are never counted publicly.
- A room holds up to 20 people, with 4 on camera at a time.
- Your status line goes through the same automated screening as chat, and a rules card is pinned at the top of the room. Shared video is off in the quiet room, as in every room that is always open.
- Nobody sees your IP address: audio and video are relayed through Lumi's own servers.
- Lumi does not record the room. Automated screening on Lumi's own servers may sample camera frames and check text to catch abuse; what gets flagged is kept as evidence for 90 days and reviewed by a person, the rest is discarded.
- Leave at any time. Report is one tap, and a person reads every report. Bans stick to the device and the connection, and a ban is never lifted for money.
What Lumi is not
Lumi is not a productivity app. It keeps no record of your sessions, no streak, and no score. The timer is for the room, not for you.
